Whether you loved her or were afraid of her straightforward, sometimes shocking no nonsense approach to both life and sexuality she was a ball of energy that could not be ignored. If you took the time to really listen to the words behind the sometimes humorous presentation you actually learned something worthwhile.
Many of us just found it easier when we were listening or reading her words while alone. She successfully worked with couples throughout her long career too.
I loved to watch her on TV. She was not afraid to be herself on various talk shows while gleefully making them squirm in their seats while asking them personal questions about the topics she was discussing.
When she began hosting her first radio show in 1980, “Sexually Speaking,” no one knew what a sensation the 15-minute late-night broadcast would become. Dr. Ruth, who had a master’s degree in sociology and a doctorate in education, as well as postgraduate work in human sexuality and experience working at Planned Parenthood, followed a simple advice-show format. She read and replied, in her strong German accent, to letters from listeners about their sex-related questions and concerns.
Dr. Ruth authored over 50 books throughout her life some of which are now Collector's Items. Check them out here or on any of the many book selling sites. There may be one that is calling your name right now.
Dr. Ruth's sound advice made her program a success, but perhaps her approachability was what truly made her a star. Just 4 feet 7 inches tall and possessed of a squeaky voice, bearing the friendly nickname Dr. Ruth, Westheimer was anything but threatening, and fans quickly became comfortable asking her their embarrassing questions.
She never judged; she just replied candidly with her advice for achieving sexual health and satisfaction.
